Mini-Motos have been confiscated and sent to the crusher as part of a clampdown on South Tyneside.

It came after residents of the Woodbine Estate in South Shields complained about the small bikes being ridden at up to 40mph on roads and footpaths. People now caught riding them in a disorderly fashion are given a warning.

If they do it a second time the bike is seized, and a penalty of at least £100 imposed. If this is not paid after seven days the bike is then crushed.

South Tyneside Council has joined forces with Northumbria Police for the campaign.
PC Paul Wolfe, community beat manager for Beacon and Bents, said: "If the bikes are ridden on pavements or public areas, then the rider must have a driving licence, tax, insurance and a helmet.

"If this is not the case, then the bike is seized immediately. The rider and his or her parents can be summonsed to court, and have points put on their licence."

Coun Audrey McMillan said: "Although they are sold as toys, these bikes can reach speeds of up to 40mph and accidents involving mini-motos have resulted in serious injury and even death.

"These machines can be dangerous and people should think long and hard before buying them. The police reaction shows how seriously they are taking this problem."
